NVIDIA Takes Over One-Third Share in non-iPad Tablets in Q1

Apple continues to lead in the tablet apps processor market and held 61 percent unit share in Q1 2011. In non-iPad tablets, NVIDIA topped with 34.4 percent unit volume share in Q1 2011, thanks to NVIDIA's first-mover advantage with the dual-core Cortex-A9 processors and Honeycomb Android design-wins, says Sravan Kundojjala, analyst on Strategy Analytics’ Handset Component Technologies (HCT) programme
Provisionally they estimate that NVIDIA's tablet apps processor share increased to 48.6 percent in Q2 2011 with the Tegra 2 processor in multiple tablets from tier-one vendors including the Motorola Xoom, Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 and 8.9, Dell Streak 7, LG Optimus Pad 3D, Acer Iconia Tab 500 and Asus Eee Pad Transformer. NVIDIA is expected to maintain this momentum with its upcoming Kal-El quad-core processor.
They estimate that x86 processors accounted for less than 5 percent of total tablet apps processors shipped in Q1 2011. Intel is expected to support Android tablets from later this year which could potentially improve the x86-based processor share in tablets.
Stand-alone apps processors accounted for 93.5 percent of total tablet apps processors shipped in Q1 2011 and they continue to believe stand-alone apps processors will dominate the tablet market in the near-to-medium term given the business model and pricing issues surrounding Wi-Fi-only versus 3G / 4G connectivity integrated tablets. Qualcomm's upcoming LTE Snapdragon processor MSM8960 could potentially increase integrated processors' share in tablets.
“The non-iPad camp is still waiting for a blockbuster product and we believe most tablet apps processor suppliers' fortunes are now tied up with this to see further growth," said 
Stuart Robinson, Director of Strategy Analytics’ Handset Component Technologies (HCT) programme."We expect Amazon's rumoured tablet and Microsoft's Windows 8 platform will be catalysts for further tablet apps processor vendors dynamics.”

Intel tries yet again with Atom for smartphones

Lower Power for Z6xx platform for Smartphones and Tablets

Intel has tackled one of its key problems - standby power - with a new family of 45nm Atom processors targetted at smartphones and tablet PCs. The company claims a 50x reduction in static power to 100microWatts.
  The newest Intel Atom processor-based platform, formerly "Moorestown", has been repartitioned to include the Z6xx, which combines the 45nm Intel Atom processor core with 3-D graphics, video encode and decode, as well as memory and display controllers into a single SoC design. It also includes the MP20 Platform Controller Hub which supports a range of system-level functions and I/O blocks. Additionally, a dedicated MSIC integrates power delivery and battery charging, and consolidates a range of analog and digital components. Alongside the Z6xx Series Family (formerly "Lincroft" system-on-chip [SoC]) is the Intel Platform Controller Hub MP20 (formerly "Langwell") and a dedicated Mixed Signal IC (MSIC), formerly "Briertown."
The new platform supports a range of scalable frequencies, up to 1.5 GHz for high-end smartphones and up to 1.9 GHz for tablets and other handheld designs. The chips also bring support for Wi-Fi, 3G/HSPA, and WiMAX, as well as a range of operation systems, including Android, Meego and Moblin. Intel is bringing together a breadth of applications and ecosystem support across these platforms
"Intel has delivered its first product that is opening the door for Intel Architecture [IA] in the smartphone market segment," said Anand Chandrasekher, Intel senior vice president and general manager of the Ultra Mobility Group. "Through "Moorestown," Intel is scaling the benefits of IA while significantly reducing the power, cost and footprint to better address handheld market segments. As a result of our efforts, the Intel Atom processor is pushing the boundaries of higher performance at significantly lower power to show what's possible as handheld devices become small, powerful mobile computers."
Building on the C6 state in the original Intel Atom processor design, the SoC incorporates new ultra-low-power states (SoI), which take the SoC to 100 micro-watts. At the platform level, Intel implemented a new, fine grain OS power management approach that manages the idle and active power states across all aspects of the system based on usage scenarios. This software-managed technique applies aggressive power and clock gating across the SoC's power islands and system voltage rails. Additionally, Intel used a new high-K 45nm LP SoC process to support a multiple transistor design with a range of high-voltage I/Os.
These power management capabilities, when combined with Burst Performance Technology for high-performance on demand, and the Bus Turbo Mode for high-bandwidth on demand, help to deliver industry leading performance and power efficiency across a range of handheld devices, says the company.
"After we delivered the first-generation Intel Atom processor with 10x thermal power reduction, we challenged ourselves to achieve 50x power reduction at the platform level," said Belli Kuttanna, chief Intel Atom processor architect. "We are delighted to have exceeded this goal while increasing performance and are proud of the architects and designers who consistently reinvent the possibilities of Intel Architecture."

Qualcomm and HP show first Snapdragon Smartbook with Android

Qualcomm is working with Hewlett Packard to design an Android-based smartbook device using the 1GHz Snapdragon QSD8250 chipset platform with integrated Scorpion central processing unit.
HP will provide a technology demonstration of the device at the Pepcom Digital Experience and ShowStoppers events taking place during the International Consumer Electronics Show 2010 in Las Vegas.

"Qualcomm's Snapdragon platform delivers significant competitive advantages to our customers, enabling them to feature exceptional performance, ubiquitous connectivity and powerful multimedia in devices ranging from mobile handsets to smartbooks," said Luis Pineda, senior vice president of product management for Qualcomm CDMA Technologies. "Working together with partners such as HP, we will be able to bring a more valuable connected experience to consumers around the world."

  The Snapdragon platform is enabling smarter smartphones, as well as a new class of devices called smartbooks. Lenovo backs ARM for Skylight netbook



Lenovo is the first major PC maker to us an ARM processor for a commercial netbook with the Lenovo Skylight, the first ARM-based processor smartbook device based on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon chipset platform launched at CES.

Toshiba TG01 heats up smartphone war


The battle of the smartphones is hotting up as Orange launches the lesser known 1GHz Toshiba TG01 "Tsunagi" in the UK to take on the iPhone 3Gs and the Palm Pre.
The TG01 is based on the Qualcomm 1GHz Snapdragon chip and runs Windows Mobile, adding a touch interface on a 4.1in WVGA wide screen and 9.9mm thick.
The TG01 also bridges the gap between notebook and mobile by featuring the latest in chipset technology and is the first handset to be sold in the UK which has a 1GHz processing power, offering fast mobile internet connectivity for a richer multimedia experience. This also enables users to make the most out of their phone, whether it be for watching video, updating social network pages or just browsing the web – just like they do on their PC.
The handset is the first from Toshiba to be part of Orange’s Signature Series with quick links so users can easily get to grips with the handset’s functionality. Shortcuts to the best of Orange TV & Video (which recommends great video content such as Sky 24/7 Football), Orange Maps (Orange’s own sat nav service which uses the TG01’s inbuilt AGPS), and Orange World (Orange’s own mobile internet portal), come integrated on the device’s user interface.

Face recognition for portables

DSP experts CEVA have teamed up with packaging IP company Tessera to put face recognition software on mobile platforms.
Tessera's Fotonation embedded image enhancement software will run on CEVA’s portable multimedia platform, the CEVA-MM2000, with a live demonstration today in Yokohama, Japan.
CEVA and Tessera are demonstrating high-performance face detection and face tracking capabilities running completely in software on CEVA’s fully programmable multimedia platform. Face detection and tracking are the latest additions to the broad range of video, audio and image enhancement software available for the MM2000 platform and further illustrates the extensive capabilities enabled for licensees of CEVA’s fully programmable multimedia solution.
"Tessera’s FotoNation technology brings embedded image enhancement capabilities to the MM2000 platform and provides a valuable addition to the software offerings available for our MM2000 platform," said Eyal Ben-Avraham, vice president Partners & Ecosystem of CEVA. Virtualisation service for phone hardware launched by OK Labs

Open Kernel Labs (OK Labs) is launching the industry’s first mobile Virtualization Integration Practice (VIP) to provide consulting and training services that help customers to define requirements, validate design approaches, and support mobile phone product development.
Leading the practice offerings is a collaborative Discovery Service that helps OK Labs OKL4 users integrate virtualization into mobile handset hardware and software architecture. Other VIP Services include Training, Porting, Quick Start, Installation, and Engineering consulting. OK VIP Services help handset OEMs, mobile network operators (MNOs), and semiconductor suppliers to realize significant value from deploying mobile phone virtualization, and to propagate that value across the mobile ecosystem.
The VIP Discovery service takes into account not only the architecture of mobile hardware and software, but also customer-defined business goals and objectives, and ecosystem relationships. The service delivery is also influenced by the OK Labs tech team’s understanding of silicon suppliers’ current capabilities and product roadmaps; the evolution of mobile operating systems and other mobile device software; the requirements and service rollout plans of MNOs; and the channels used to deliver handsets, applications, and content.

Qualcomm launches 45nm Snapdragon chipset with 3G ...

Qualcomm has developed a new version of its ARM processor-based Snapdragon platform with a next-generation chipset that uses 45nanometre process technology to provide faster processing, significant battery life improvements and other enhancements for smartphones and netbooks, as well as adding 3G data capability.
The Snapdragon QSD8650A chipset – scheduled for sampling before the end of 2009 – boosts the clock to 1.3GHz for 30 percent higher performance as well as enhanced multimedia and 2D/3D graphics, while reducing power consumption by 30% and a low standby power of less than 10 millwatts.
“This latest addition to the growing family of Snapdragon chipsets will help our customers to develop faster, more power-efficient smartphones and smartbooks,” said Luis Pineda, senior vice president of marketing and product management at Qualcomm CDMA Technologies. “This new 45 nm device shows our continued commitment to extending the capabilities of the Snapdragon platform with leading-edge process technology and an expanded list of integrated features.”

The QSD8650A chipset also offers multi-mode UMTS and CDMA 3G mobile broadband connectivity in the same 15x15mm package as current Snapdragon chipsets. A standalone, power-efficient 2D graphics accelerator and enhanced 3D graphics core deliver a powerful multimedia experience with better Adobe Flash performance. It also features integrated GPS and high-definition video recording and playback, the latest Bluetooth 2.1 technology and support for Wi-Fi, high-resolution WXGA displays and mobile TV technologies such as MediaFLO, DVB-H and ISDB-T.
This is interesting as Qualcomm had already has a 45nm dual core version, the QSD8672 that runs up to 1.5GHz, but there was obviously a need for a single core, lower cost, lower power version.

More than 15 manufacturers are now developing more than 30 Snapdragon-based products, the first of which is the Toshiba TG01 Smartphone, introduced in February 2009. Others on show in Taipei this week include ASUS, Compal Communications, Foxconn, High Tech Computer (HTC), Inventec and Wistron.
“The mobile industry is evolving, and it’s become apparent that consumers are more sophisticated in their expectations than ever before,” said Stephen Chen, president of Compal Communications. “Snapdragon’s integrated 3G mobile broadband brings a new level of connectivity and convenience to the smartphone and smartbook categories.”

MPEG LA eyes up LTE patents

Patent pool expert MPEG LA says it is making significant progress working with a group of interested companies to create a joint patent pool license for the Long Term Evolution (LTE) Standard for mobile telecommunications. It is calling for interested parties, both with patents and patent applications, to be part of the pool.
MPEG LA’s efforts, started last year, have been directed toward educating the market about the benefits of a pool license to address the patent thicket around this next generation wireless technology and assist the market with its adoption. A fight or uncertainty over the patent situation would dramatically slow the adoption of the the technology, as happened with high definition video and the AVC patents.
“The market is ready, and we are proud that industry leading companies have invited us to facilitate creation of an LTE pool license,” said MPEG LA President and CEO Larry Horn.
“Given the history of telecommunications patent pools, MPEG LA has taken the time to consult directly with mobile network operators, network equipment manufacturers and mobile handset companies regarding the benefits of a patent pool for LTE, and they have encouraged MPEG LA to move forward with this effort. Next generation wireless technology, with its multifunctional capabilities, begs for a patent pool licensing alternative to make its full potential available to consumers worldwide, and MPEG LA’s success in creating large pool licenses uniquely positions us to achieve it.”

MPEG LA would like as many essential patent holders as possible to be included in this process. Therefore, MPEG LA invites any party that believes it has patents that are essential to the LTE Standard to submit them by June 19, 2009 for evaluation of their essentiality by MPEG LA’s patent evaluators in order to participate in the creation of a joint LTE patent license.
Although only issued patents will be included in the license, in order to participate in the license development process, patent applications with claims that their owners believe are essential to the LTE Standard and likely to issue in a patent also may be submitted.
A key point is that, although the process will begin with LTE, it may be expanded at a later stage to provide coverage for backward compatibility with other mobile
telecommunications technologies.

Renesas launches Full HD mobile chip

Japanese chip supplier Renesas Technology has launched an application processor for mobile phones that gives Full High-Definition (1,920 × 1,080 pixels) video recording and playback support and uses the HDMI interface, the first time in a mobile chip.
The video processing unit of the SH-MobileHD1 (the SH7370)delivers approximately six times the performance of comparable earlier products from Renesas, enabling support for Full HD video on a single chip. In addition to the low power consumption essential for mobile phones, the new application processor also features more robust multimedia functionality. It is available in a small package designed to facilitate more compact video and audio processing systems for mobile phones.

The device supports the AVC video with a playback/recording frame rate of 30 frames per second (fps) at 500MHz, twice the operating frequency earlier devices. It also incorporates two 24-bit dedicated audio DSPs to lighten the audio processing load on the CPU and reduce power consumption. This enables one DSP to handle (stereo) audio processing such as the AAC (Advanced Audio Coding) high-quality audio compression standard and Dolby Digital codec, with power to spare, while the other DSP handles sonic enhancement such as equalization and sample rate conversion (SRC). In addition, heavy-load processing tasks such as 5.1-channel audio can be assigned to the dual DSPs. Support for Dolby Digital and 5.1-channel audio allow interoperation with applications designed for consumer audio components.

Interestingly, the IC includes the HDMI high-speed multimedia interface to a transmitter.This allows connection and output of Full HD resolution video to digital home electronics components such as LCD TVs or Blu-ray Disc recorders.
In addition, the SH-MobileHD1 can connect to an SD memory card and wireless LAN (WLAN), and it supports multiplexing of the MPEG2-TS (transport system) and MP4 formats. Since MPEG2-TS is rapidly gaining popularity as a multiplexing format for HD and Full HD video in the digital home electronics field, support by the SH-MobileHD1 enables easy sharing of content between digital home electronics products and mobile phones. When content is stored as MP4 files, it can be shared easily over a network such as a WLAN. This helps increase the usability of video applications.
The processor and 512 megabits of synchronous DRAM (SDRAM) are integrated into a single 407-pin 10mm x 11mm BGA package as a system-in-package (SiP) device.
15Mpixel camera support
The SH-MobileHD1 also has a camera interface that supports direct connection to a 15-megapixel camera module. This allows high-speed importing of voluminous data from a high-resolution camera and makes possible a variety of display functions, including electronic zoom and superimposed effects such as an on-screen display (OCD) function or hardware cursor (HWC) function. There is also compatibility with BT.709 format YUV data as part the support for One-Seg TV broadcasts. This makes it possible to convert snippets of TV broadcast data to JPEG format with no degradation in image quality. The on-chip peripherals include an LCD controller with support for 24-bit TFT color LCD panels and a sound interface.
Future
While Renesas is well established in Asia in mobile phones, particularly in Japan (as seen by the One Seg support), it has yet to make significant inroads into Europe. Coupled with the global downturn and the pending merger of Renesas with NEC, there is perhaps doubt on the commitment to the mobile market, although this is one of the areas where there is little if any overlap between the two companies.

TI launches OMAP4 for 1080p video

Texas Instruments has launched its multicore OMAP4 mobile applications platform with support for 1080p video record and playback, 20 megapixel (MP) imaging and
approximately a week of audio play time. The new platform provides significant improvements in performance and play time compared to today’s most popular Smartphones, with 10x faster Web page loading times, more than 7x higher computing performance, 6x higher video resolution, 10x better graphics performance and 6x longer audio play time.
At the heart of the OMAP 4 platform is a 45nm system-on-chip with four main engines: a programmable multimedia engine based on TI’s C64x DSP and power-efficient, multi-format hardware accelerators; general-purpose processing based on the dual-core ARM Cortex-A9 MPCore supporting symmetric multiprocessing (SMP) and capable of speeds of more than 1GH per core; a high-performance programmable graphics engine; and an Image
Signal Processor (ISP) for unparalleled video and imaging performance.
“For the past decade, TI has focused on providing an optimal balance of high performance and low power consumption in our OMAP product line to address our customers’ needs to quickly and easily address new market trends,” said Greg Delagi, senior vice president and head of TI's Wireless Business Unit. “The OMAP 4 platform will enable a new class of mobile devices that will redefine the boundaries of smartphones and MIDs.”
The new platform will support popular leading mobile operating systems and is validated for real-world use cases, taking into account the many elements of the mobile consumer’s experience to simplify application creation and help handset manufacturers get to market quickly.
The first members of the family are the OMAP4430 and OMAP4440, including:
o Four powerful, high-performance processing engines:
* General-purpose processing dual-core Cortex-A9 MPCore
* Programmable multimedia engine based on TI’s C64x DSP and power-efficient, multi-format hardware accelerators
* POWERVR SGX540 graphics engine

The OMAP 4 platform will support Linux variants such as the Android Mobile Platform and LiMo, as well as Symbian OS and Microsoft Windows Mobile. Additionally, software for the OMAP 4 platform is tested and validated up to the application level, dramatically reducing development time. Further easing the design process, the OMAP 4 platform includes:
o Pre-integrated support for mobile connectivity, including TI’s current and future combo WiLink Wi-Fi solutions, NaviLink GPS solutions, and BlueLink Bluetooth solutions;
o Pre-validated modem interface software to easily connect the OMAP 4 platform to any external modem;
o New companion power and audio management solutions (TWL6030 and TWL6040 specifically designed to address the performance needs of the OMAP 4 platform; and
o Broad portfolio of other hardware solutions optimized for the OMAP 4 platform, including: DLP Pico projection technology, analogue components and other complementary technologies.
TI's OMAP 4 platform and development tools are expected to sample in the second half of 2009, with production expected by the second half of 2010. These products are intended for high-volume wireless OEMs and ODMs and are not available through distributors.

Backing for mobile editing chip designer


Dublin-based chip designer Movidia has secured over US$14 million in Series A funding from an international syndicate to bring its mobile video processor technology to market. Movidia’s first product, already proven in silicon, is set to launch in early 2009.
This low power video processor will enable powerful User Generated Content (UGC) video production functions for mobile phones and other consumer electronics products and will allow cell phone manufacturers to provide differentiated products and services to meet the growing global demand for mobile social networking. Users will be able to do complex in-clip editing to add post-production effects such as slow motion and super resolution zoom to their own video content in real time and on the move without the need for a PC.

Movidia was founded by an experienced management team from the semiconductor industry including CEO Sean Mitchell (right), CTO David Moloney and COO Paul Costigan. The company’s R&D and sales teams are located in Dublin, Hong Kong and Romania.

According to UGC industry analysts Juniper Research strong growth is expected in mobile social networking revenues with a market size of $7.3 billion by 2013. Meanwhile In-Stat expects that the worldwide market for mobile video revenues could reach $6.2 billion in the coming five years, while ABI Research forecasts 140 million mobile social networking users by 2013.
Funding
The venture syndicate is led by Celtic House Venture Partners and Capital-E and including Emertec Gestion, AIB Seed Capital Fund and Enterprise Ireland.
