Digital still cameras on the way out says report...

... as video booms and other portable multimedia devices take over

The point-and-shoot digital still camera (DSC) — once a red-hot consumer item and a best-selling retail item — has about three good years left before market shipments begin to decline, as it is supplanted by newer technologies and the omnipresent camera in cell phones, according to market research firm iSuppli.
Factory unit shipments of compact DSCs are projected to rise by 10.4 percent and reach 121.4 million units in 2010 and enjoy modest growth for the next three years. However, production will decline in 2014 as the market matures. During that year, shipments are expected to decline by 0.6 percent to 135.4 million units, with low-end DSC models expected to encounter stiff opposition from the cameras in cell phones, which increasingly will become the primary image-capture device for consumers.
The anticipated growth of the DSC market in 2010 continues the up-and-down fortunes of the sector during the last few years. After expanding by 16.3 percent in 2006, 19.5 percent in 2007 and 10.6 percent in 2008, the DSC space began to decelerate in the second half of 2008 as the global economy faltered. The year 2009 proved to be an even tougher period, when shipments fell 13.8 percent to 110.0 million units.
DSC sales in 2010 profited from a resurgence in sales because of declining prices and an improved economy, according to Pamela Tufegdzic, iSuppli analyst for consumer electronics. Nonetheless, the DSC market suffers from underlying weakness.
“Overall trends are unfavorable for a number of reasons,” Tufegdzic noted. “In particular, multimedia cell phones now equipped with higher-megapixel cameras are cannibalizing low-end DSCs that have equivalent resolutions.”
This phenomenon is occurring in Asia and Europe, as consumers in these regions have grown comfortable with taking pictures through their camera phones.
Consumers, Tufegdzic pointed out, also increasingly share and store photos through social networks such as Facebook and Flickr, which are unable to effectively process higher-megapixel pictures due to bandwidth issues—further leading them to abandon DSCs in favor of more flexible devices, such as camera phones.
Finally, the unstable economy has led to longer camera replacement cycles.
“A higher megapixel count is no longer an automatic selling point for DSCs,” Tufegdzic said. “This is because megapixel density has reached a point of diminishing returns, especially in mature markets.”

Opportunities exist despite general market weakness
Despite the gloomy prognosis for the overall DSC market, pockets of growth can be found within segments of the industry, such as in hybrid high-definition (HD) cameras, future 3-D cameras and the higher-end range of consumer cameras known as digital still lens reflex (DSLR).
The hybrid HD camera is an important technology trend that is fundamentally changing the DSC market by integrating high-definition video recording and still-camera capability into a single device. Although still in the somewhat early stages at this time, hybrid cameras will become more popular and affordable in the marketplace, especially as advancements are made in silicon processing capability and as prices for flash memory storage decline.
Shipment of hybrid cameras will grow from 8.3 million units in 2009—representing about 7.6 percent of total DSC units shipped—to a staggering 120 million units in 2014—accounting for about 89 percent of the total market. Already, hybrid camera models are available from Eastman Kodak, Canon, Nikon, Samsung and Sony, etc. and hybrid cameras at the $150-$200 price point represent the next big growth opportunity in the industry, iSuppli believes.
The 3-D camera represents another area of growth for the camera sector. With 3-D games and video already being offered, iSuppli believes 3-D cameras will likely hit store shelves by the 2011 to 2012 timeframe. Nonetheless, such cameras are not expected to become a mainstream technology until after the 3-D screens that are used to show 3-D pictures and video reach approximately 30 percent penetration.
Among DSLR cameras—used more by professional photographers in the past—falling prices will spur increased adoption by consumers that are now able to make the upgrade. 
Other areas of growth for digital cameras include the integration of features such as GPS and Wi-Fi for geo-tagging and allowing consumers to send photos wirelessly to the Internet, a PC or a printer.

MPEG LA eyes up LTE patents

Patent pool expert MPEG LA says it is making significant progress working with a group of interested companies to create a joint patent pool license for the Long Term Evolution (LTE) Standard for mobile telecommunications. It is calling for interested parties, both with patents and patent applications, to be part of the pool.
MPEG LA’s efforts, started last year, have been directed toward educating the market about the benefits of a pool license to address the patent thicket around this next generation wireless technology and assist the market with its adoption. A fight or uncertainty over the patent situation would dramatically slow the adoption of the the technology, as happened with high definition video and the AVC patents.
“The market is ready, and we are proud that industry leading companies have invited us to facilitate creation of an LTE pool license,” said MPEG LA President and CEO Larry Horn.
“Given the history of telecommunications patent pools, MPEG LA has taken the time to consult directly with mobile network operators, network equipment manufacturers and mobile handset companies regarding the benefits of a patent pool for LTE, and they have encouraged MPEG LA to move forward with this effort. Next generation wireless technology, with its multifunctional capabilities, begs for a patent pool licensing alternative to make its full potential available to consumers worldwide, and MPEG LA’s success in creating large pool licenses uniquely positions us to achieve it.”

MPEG LA would like as many essential patent holders as possible to be included in this process. Therefore, MPEG LA invites any party that believes it has patents that are essential to the LTE Standard to submit them by June 19, 2009 for evaluation of their essentiality by MPEG LA’s patent evaluators in order to participate in the creation of a joint LTE patent license.
Although only issued patents will be included in the license, in order to participate in the license development process, patent applications with claims that their owners believe are essential to the LTE Standard and likely to issue in a patent also may be submitted.
A key point is that, although the process will begin with LTE, it may be expanded at a later stage to provide coverage for backward compatibility with other mobile
telecommunications technologies.

Renesas launches Full HD mobile chip

Japanese chip supplier Renesas Technology has launched an application processor for mobile phones that gives Full High-Definition (1,920 × 1,080 pixels) video recording and playback support and uses the HDMI interface, the first time in a mobile chip.
The video processing unit of the SH-MobileHD1 (the SH7370)delivers approximately six times the performance of comparable earlier products from Renesas, enabling support for Full HD video on a single chip. In addition to the low power consumption essential for mobile phones, the new application processor also features more robust multimedia functionality. It is available in a small package designed to facilitate more compact video and audio processing systems for mobile phones.
HD multimedia support
The device supports the AVC video with a playback/recording frame rate of 30 frames per second (fps) at 500MHz, twice the operating frequency earlier devices. It also incorporates two 24-bit dedicated audio DSPs to lighten the audio processing load on the CPU and reduce power consumption. This enables one DSP to handle (stereo) audio processing such as the AAC (Advanced Audio Coding) high-quality audio compression standard and Dolby Digital codec, with power to spare, while the other DSP handles sonic enhancement such as equalization and sample rate conversion (SRC). In addition, heavy-load processing tasks such as 5.1-channel audio can be assigned to the dual DSPs. Support for Dolby Digital and 5.1-channel audio allow interoperation with applications designed for consumer audio components.
Home multimedia
Interestingly, the IC includes the HDMI high-speed multimedia interface to a transmitter.This allows connection and output of Full HD resolution video to digital home electronics components such as LCD TVs or Blu-ray Disc recorders.
In addition, the SH-MobileHD1 can connect to an SD memory card and wireless LAN (WLAN), and it supports multiplexing of the MPEG2-TS (transport system) and MP4 formats. Since MPEG2-TS is rapidly gaining popularity as a multiplexing format for HD and Full HD video in the digital home electronics field, support by the SH-MobileHD1 enables easy sharing of content between digital home electronics products and mobile phones. When content is stored as MP4 files, it can be shared easily over a network such as a WLAN. This helps increase the usability of video applications.
The processor and 512 megabits of synchronous DRAM (SDRAM) are integrated into a single 407-pin 10mm x 11mm BGA package as a system-in-package (SiP) device.
15Mpixel camera support
The SH-MobileHD1 also has a camera interface that supports direct connection to a 15-megapixel camera module. This allows high-speed importing of voluminous data from a high-resolution camera and makes possible a variety of display functions, including electronic zoom and superimposed effects such as an on-screen display (OCD) function or hardware cursor (HWC) function. There is also compatibility with BT.709 format YUV data as part the support for One-Seg TV broadcasts. This makes it possible to convert snippets of TV broadcast data to JPEG format with no degradation in image quality. The on-chip peripherals include an LCD controller with support for 24-bit TFT color LCD panels and a sound interface.
Future
While Renesas is well established in Asia in mobile phones, particularly in Japan (as seen by the One Seg support), it has yet to make significant inroads into Europe. Coupled with the global downturn and the pending merger of Renesas with NEC, there is perhaps doubt on the commitment to the mobile market, although this is one of the areas where there is little if any overlap between the two companies.

ARM aims for portable video market with new buy...

Processor designer ARM has acquired Logipard, a leading Sweden-based video IP company, in a move that provides video acceleration IP to ARM customers.
Logipard designs power-efficient video encode and decode acceleration technologies for the mobile and consumer markets is the leading provider of video IP to one of the world’s leading mobile technology suppliers for platforms used by LG Electronics and two other leading mobile handset OEMs. The Logipard video IP has shipped in more than 30 million mobile phone units to date.
The technology will be combined with ARM's Mali 3D graphics core to bring to market the Mali-VE multi standard video engine family of products, sitting alongside existing ARM processor cores. This is a step away from ARM's focus on using DSP extensions such as NeON for video processing and a move back to the traditional video co-processor approach.
Mali-VE will support the majority of the leading video codec formats and provides peerless encode and decode codec capabilities for image resolutions from QCIF up to High Definition (1080p) as used in the latest high quality camcorders, digital televisions and Blu-ray players.
The technology offers full encode support for H.264 at baseline and main profiles, H.263 and MPEG-4SP, making it suitable for a wide range of end user devices such as mobile phones, portable media players and camcorders. In addition, the flexible architecture enables decoding of High Profile H.264 and all profiles of VC-1 as well as MPEG-2, as required by Internet enabled devices for browsing video content such as YouTube. The programmable nature of the architecture also allows for future standards and new codec tools to be implemented using firmware upgrade only, significantly improving time to market to support new standards in existing designs.
It is available today supporting resolutions up to D1 whilst the high definition 1080p Mali-VE6 solution will be available in the second half of 2009.
