In a dramatic move, Chinese telecoms giant ZTE has developed its own cloud computing operating system and is setting up a 10,000 strong cloud computing centre in Nanjing so that over time cloud-based systems will make up a third of the business.
ZTE will use the CoCloud operating system for a range of IT resource management platforms covering virtual computing, cloud operations management and cloud security, all key for portable multimedia systems. The solutions cover all major industries from the traditional telecoms market to government and enterprise markets.
“It is our ambition to use cloud computing to account for a third of ZTE’s total revenues,” said Mr. Shi Lirong, President of ZTE. “The establishment of ZTE’s Global Cloud Computing Centre in Nanjing, with space for up to 10,000 R&D personnel, is a significant milestone for ZTE’s cloud computing strategy.
“Cloud computing has revolutionised the provision of technology resources and applications and is bringing radical change to both the information technology and communications technology markets, and opening up new opportunities for both creators and consumers of technology solutions. ZTE aims to be a major global player in the development of these markets.”
ZTE’s cloud computing solutions bring together a number of the company’s major fields of expertise – network architecture design and development, commercial applications with a telecom requirement, and network security management and control.
Compared to traditional operating systems, CoCloud gives users a clear view of system processes, enables the dynamic transfer of resources to where they are most needed, provides templates for fast development of new resources, and is easily adapted to respond to different service management scenarios.
ZTE will continue to work with service providers around the world to further develop cloud computing technologies which help transform the telecom industry. In addition, ZTE has established partnerships with many government agencies and public and private enterprises to develop cloud-based solutions in fields such as e-government and intelligent transportation.
